Description
The Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1901, is a reminder of Alaska’s past ---- a time of the Russian fur trade. These days, this Russian Orthodox Church is a popular picture-opportunity stop for tourists as they head south to Homer on the Sterling Highway. The many snow-clad mountains and volcanoes that lie across the Cook Inlet, form an impressive backdrop to the church. The 3000 m. volcanoes of Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna are both still active ----- Mount Redoubt’s most recent eruption was in 2009, while Mount Iliamna’s last eruption was in 1952.
